Attorney John G. McNally

Our founding attorney, John G. McNally, was born and raised in Trenton, and practically born into the legal profession. He is a third-generation lawyer and one of seven family members who became attorneys or judges, including his father, the late Judge Gerald A. McNally, the first Judge of the 33rd District Court who proudly served for 25 years.

After earning his law degree from Detroit College of Law (now Michigan State University Law School) in 1992, John went into practice with his brother, Michael K. McNally, sharpening his litigation and personal injury skills. After Michael was elected to the bench in 1994, Mr. McNally continued to practice on his own. Recognizing that there were no sizeable law firms in the Downriver area, John set out to create one. Building on the solid foundation of the family name, he achieved his own measure of success and respect and gradually realized the vision of a thriving firm with five lawyers and ten staff.

Our Focus

Over time, however, the rigors of running a large firm drew John away from the close interaction with his clients that he so enjoyed and his clients deserved. After a decade of operating a large firm, he shifted back to solo practice to provide the one-on-one attention and responsiveness to which he and his clients were accustomed. He continued to be directly accountable to his clients in all areas of litigation with his uncompromising integrity and work ethic.

Having always focused on personal injury since 1992, McNally Law continues to represent clients in the areas of estate planning, business and insurance litigation, and criminal defense, in Wayne and Monroe counties. With a primary focus on personal injury, John also continues to offer quality legal services in the areas of estate planning, business law, insurance litigation, criminal defense and real estate law.

With attorney McNally, our clients have direct access to an astute adviser, a skilled negotiator and an experienced litigator who works hard to obtain a positive result in every case. He cares about his clients and the outcome of their legal issues, investing the time and resources required to protect their interests and help them reach their goals.

In The News

The D Profile: What types of personal injury are you seeing most today, Mr. McNally?

John McNally: By far, we are handling the catastrophic-type injuries sustained in automobile, truck, and motorcycle accidents.

Profile: What steps should a person who is involved in an injury accident take?

McNally: First, contact the police and then immediately get medical help. Thereafter or as soon as possible a knowledgeable attorney should be called and assess the matter. Many people are not aware of the benefits available for medical expenses, wage loss, and household services.

Profile: What steps do you take when a person calls you?

McNally: We speak with the prospective client at great length. If warranted, we investigate the accident, gathering and preserving evidence for court. We also help with making the insurance company is providing the benefits it is obligated to provide.

Profile: You have been practicing here in the Downriver area for some time. Why should a person call you, rather than one of the high-profile attorneys advertising on television?

McNally: The vast majority of the attorneys you see on television never go to court. Conversely, I am extremely proud of the work we have done and the highly successful outcomes we have earned for our clients, including plenty of million dollar outcomes. We have also been named one of Michigan’s Top 100 Trial Lawyers by the National Trial Lawyer Association.

Profile: Do you take fewer cases?

McNally: We do. I have always enjoyed getting to know our clients and taking a vested interest in their case. We are absolutely in it together. I speak to my clients, personally, on a weekly or monthly basis, from the beginning until the end. It is not about our office making money. We are truly privileged to help our friends and neighbors during their difficult times. And I’ll do it until they have to carry me out of my office.

Profile: Good people can sometimes be caught up in bad situations. What should people do to minimize the damage to their bank accounts if they suddenly find themselves at fault in an accident?

McNally: They should check their own insurance policies to make sure they have enough coverage if it is determined they are at fault. They should review their policies on an annual basis with an experienced attorney to make sure they have sufficient insurance in place to protect themselves and their loved ones in the unfortunate event of an auto accident. We review policies all the time at no charge to those who contact our office.

Born and raised in Trenton, John McNally is a lifelong resident of the Downriver area. He resides with Jeannie, his wife of 23 years. They have three children: Megan, Jack, and Brooke.

While he was named one of Michigan’s top 100 criminal trial attorneys, John McNally prefers· the personal injury side of his law practice. “I find it very rewarding,” he says, “helping people get through what could be their biggest life challenge.”

His clients have certainly faced significant challenges. “One gentleman was severely injured when he was struck by a semi on 1-75,” McNally says. “The insurance company offered very little money even though he went through ten surgeries and spent six months in the hospital and rehab facilities.” McNally was able to obtain nearly two million dollars in compensation for the injured man and arranged for the insurance company to provide for future medical services as well, McNally also points to a woman whose insurance company offered only ten thousand dollars after she was critically injured in an automobile accident. He succeeded in obtaining a settlement of $400,000 for her.

In another case, a young girl had her face mauled by a big dog. “We were able to fight the insurance company to pay for her multiple plastic surgeries,” McNally says, “and we arranged to have additional payments stretched out during her lifetime, so she would have financial security as a young woman and a mother.”

It is situations like these that McNally feels particularly satisfying. “When people are injured, they simply assume everyone around them is going to do the right thing,” McNally says, “but we know from experience that many times insurance companies don’t do the right thing. They do what is best for them.” If that weren’t the case, he says, there would be no need for attorneys. “There is no overreaching on our part” he says. “We only want the companies to provide their policyholders what they expected when they paid they premiums every month.”

Insurance companies would like to have people believe that their rates go up because of the amounts they pay out because of litigation. Yet that is not the case according to McNally. He says insurance companies have millions of dollars to lend out to finance large projects. “They make tons of money from the interest on their loans to build things like shopping centers and huge buildings, and still their rates go up,” he explains.

“It’s a shame that we have to fight the invasive companies to make them provide what they charged people’s premiums for.”
